Changes Induced by Self-Burning in Technosols from a Coal Mine Waste Pile: A Hydropedological Approach

چکیده

Coal mining originates environmental impacts on soil and water bodies, including the leaching of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mine waste piles. This research aims to identify characterize changes induced by self-burning Technosols from a coal pile means comprehensive hydropedological assessment encompassing geochemical, mineralogical, hydrological data, bearing mind potential PTEs PAHs. The profile two contiguous areas (an area with normal pedological evolution vs. an affected self-burning) was characterized terms morphological features. Each horizon sampled analyzed for geochemical mineralogical characterization. unsaturated hydraulic conductivity (Ki) also measured all horizons. Finally, PAHs evaluated. Several were identified studied Technosols: development specific horizons; destruction humified organic matter; contrasting composition, especially deeper modifications, pointing clay minerals higher ion exchange capacity surface sulphates lower structural order; diverse Ki values intermediate part profile; susceptibility demonstrated that causes severe relevance, influence

Distributed Temperature Measurement in a Self-Burning Coal Waste Pile through a GIS Open Source Desktop Application

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are often used to assess and monitor the environmental impacts caused by mining activities. The aim of this work was to develop a new application to produce dynamic maps for monitoring the temperature variations in a self-burning coal waste pile, under a GIS open source environment—GIS-ECOAL (freely available). The performance of the application was evalua...

Evaluation of the impacts of mine drainage from a coal waste pile on the surrounding environment at Smolnica, southern Poland.

Mine drainage impacts from a coal waste pile at Smolnica, Poland have been monitored. Groundwater in an unconfined aquifer downgradient from the pile has near-neutral pH, but high concentrations of sulfate (up to 3,827 mg/l), chloride (up to 903 mg/l), and sodium (up to 2,606 mg/l). Concentrations of iron and manganese are elevated only locally, and concentrations of other metals are low. The b...

CO dispersion from a coal fire in a mine entry

Five mine fire experiments were conducted in a 2.08 m high and 2.90 m wide, ventilated mine entry in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)’s Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to determine the effect of the dispersion of carbon monoxide (CO) on mine fire detection. CO measurements were made at distances from 7.6 m to 45.2 m downwind from the fire with diffusion mode CO...
